Ok, no one’s going to pretend that living through a kitchen remodel is fun, but plan properly, and you’ll find it a whole lot easier than you might have imagined.
Fortunately, we’ve been through this a time or few and have developed a build process that’s designed to keep you happy and the process as harmonious as possible.
Here are our two top tips:
1. Designate a Temporary Kitchen
Nothing else you do matters more. Even if you’re planning to eat out or bring in takeout, you still need a place to make school lunches, brew the morning coffee, and so on. Many people choose the garage, basement, or workroom.
2. Think Small
As in appliances. Plan on making meals that can be made using your slow cooker, toaster oven, and electric griddle or skillet. If you can’t move your current refrigerator into the temporary space, invest in a mini-fridge and ice chest. And think small when it comes to kitchen gear, too. One spatula, whisk, and wooden spoon may be all you need.
Finally, remember the big picture: Your beautiful new space. In the grand scheme of things, a little meal prep on the fly now will result in years of kitchen bliss!
